Antonapoulos works in his cousin's fruit store, and Singer works as a silver engraver in a jewelry shop. well, I suppose this mightn't be much of a suggestion, in that I can't find the words to describe to you "what the book is about" - the wikipedia page says that it's "about a deaf man named John Singer and the people he encounters in a 1930s mill town in the US state of Georgia. The first chapter of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter introduces us to John Singer and Spiros Antonapoulos, two good friends who live together in a town in the Deep South and who are both deaf-mutes. If you have read it, tell me your thoughts on it. I have reread The Heart is a Lonely Hunter many times since then, and I find it gets better with each reading. It's a completely engrossing, and magnificently crafted, piece of work - a wonder, to know that it's McCullers's debut, published when she was just twenty-three years old! I found it a fantastic read back then, and I still do. I found it on the last day of school, tenth grade, in a stack among other books on a table in the library, meant to be rotated out or replaced or just done away with.
